Greenland Ski & Sail
An arctic expedition among peaks and fjordsDue to exceptional snow conditions this year we are running this trip 5/12 June !
Skiing the mountains of West Greenland is an experience like no other.
In a stunning arctic environnement, we will ski straight from the boat, from the ocean to the peaks...and back !
Thanks to the long spring days we'll be able to summit peaks over 1700m asl, do several runs a day from one fjord to the other, or simply chill on the Skydancer's deck in the sweet Arctic light...
Trip Essentials
Our sailboat in the fjords of West Greenland
Finding the best tours, the best weather, and the best snow is what makes a successful ski touring trip,
But experiencing an intense human adventure on a beautiful sailboat, eating excellent food in good company is what makes this ski and sail trip exceptional!
The Skydancer is a 73 foot schooner, which can accommodate 10 people and 2 crew members.
Estella and Nick will be our hosts. Their sense of hospitality is second to none and they will make you feel at home from the moment you step on board.
Their main concern is to take us safely from one anchorage to the next, while giving us an unforgettable time on board.
Their kindness, their dynamism and their passion for adventure are the major assets of this trip.
Estella and Nick, our hosts in Greenland
Itinerary & Program
Day 1
Flight to Greenland via Copenhaguen and Kangerlussuaq.
We'll get installed onboard the SkyDancer in teh afternoon.
After a safety briefing from the Captain, we'll start sailing towards our first anchorage.
Day 2
First turns in Greenland !
This is gonna be our new routine for the week : breakfast, gear check, dinghy, ski touring, back to the boat, relax and get ready for dinner.
Day 3 to 6
Skiing in Greenland requires flexibility, as we have to cope with the weather, the sea, and the snow conditions, therefore we don't make any plan to make sure we go after the best possible ski touring conditions.
Every evening around the map table we'll discuss the next day, before sailing to a new spot.
Day 7
Last ski day in our arctic paradise, and last dinner on board with our hosts Estella and Nick, moment of celebration for a whole week opf ski adventures in the fjords of West Greenland.
Day 8
Flight back home.
Ski touring in Greenland : what to expect ?
The west coast of Greenland offers most of what any skiers can dream of, and it all come in size XL !
Whatever you are used to, get ready : this is next level...
Terrain :
In Greenland, we'll ski mostly on glaciers.
They are all over the place, from the huge inlandsis that we will sometimes contemplate from a peak, to the glaciers carving their way to the ocean on the slopes of the fjords. These glaciers are often moderately steep and overlooked by steeper couloirs, a great combination to fulfill all skiers wishes.
The region we'll be exploring, from Maniitsoq in the south to Sisimiut in the north is one of the best suited for ski touring, with fjords easily giving boat acces to the skiing. No long flat walks before hitting the slopes, it all starts close to the shore.
Depending on the group and the conditions, we'll be able to go for summits from 1000 to 1800m above sea level, and we'll ski mellow summits, huge bowls or couloirs.
Climate & Snow :
There is no Gulf Stream in Greenland, and with the ocean cooling the temperatures you can expect a longer ski season than at the same latitude in Europe.
At 65 degrees north, the winters are long and we will ski cold snow until late May.
In early June, when the Norwegian coast is already getting warm, the temperatures in West Greenland are still oscillating around 0, and it becomes then possible to ski both powder and corn !
Daylight :
During our expedition, we'll be between 65° and 67° North, so almost precisely on the arctic circle.
In late April the days will already be very long, with a few hours of twilight that will shrink day after day until mid june when the midnight sun comes.
This season is great for ski touring with the long days giving us many opportunities to make the best out of the weather.
The challenge will be to adjust to a whole new rythm. No need for "alpine starts" at 5am...but we might be out skiing late in the evenings !
