Ski Touring in Romsdal
The gem of the Norwegian west coast. The region of Åndalsnes is hosting some of the most impressive and famous peaks in Norway, like Trollveggen, and has been famous among mountaineers for more than a century.
Skiers also have been around for a long time, and the rise of ski touring these last ten years brought more and more of them to Romsdal, and for a good reason : it's probably one of the best spot in Norway, and it's easily accessible from anywhere in Southern Scandinavia.
Trip Essentials
Åndalsnes, how to get there ?
Åndalsnes is located on the southern shore of Isfjorden, in the Møre og Romsdal county, and the scenery is made of pristine fjords and high peaks all around.
With Åndalses train station 5 minutes away from Hotel Aak, Romsdal is a ski touring destiation that is best reached by train, and it's a great choice for sustainable travelling, especially if you're coming from anywhere in Scandinavia.
By using the rail instead of flying, you can divide your carbon footprint by 90%, as you can calculate here.
The train ride from Oslo takes 5 to 6 hours in beautiful surroundings, you can check the possibilities and schedules on this website.
Hotel Aak
The history of this incredible place goes back to 1856, and Hotel Aak is considered the first tourist hotel in Norway.
Already during the end of the 19th century, it's been a meeting place for mountaineers who were coming to Romsdal to climb the major peaks of the region : Romsdalshorn, Store Vengetind etc...
After the golden era of first ascents, the buliding has been used for different purposes and left in a poor condition until the years of first descents came.
In Norway like in the rest of the world ski touring was a growing sport, and after being a Mountain Sports Center for some years, a young couple, Kristine and Odd-Erik eventually took over the building to run a Hotel and made what Hotel Aak is today : a gathering place for mountaineering and skiing enthousiats, a home that offers history, comfort, great food and atmosphere in the heart of the stunning Norwegian nature, summer & winter.
Ski touring in Romsdal
In Romsdal in February, you will experience a real Norwegian winter !
The west coast of Norway is famous for its changing weather (and for good amounts of snow), so expect both bluebird days to ski the high peaks, and snow storms to go explore the best forest runs.
In February, the amount of daylight is more than enough to have long days outside, and the chances for cold weather and powder are high. This, combined with the best possible local knowledge is your guarantee for descents you won't forget.
This is a region where everything is close, and you won't have to drive too long from the Hotel to put your skis on. This is also a unique feature that helps making the best out of the weather and snow conditions
You will certainly visit the classics of the region (Blånebba, Kirketaket etc..) or give a try to some more challenging terrain like the couloirs on Store Vengetind, plus all the secret spots and less famous runs that our guides are familiar with. The altitude of the mountains we will ski is often between 1000m and 1400m, with a few higher summits in the 1800/1900m range.
Therefore you will need to be fit enough to hike up for a minimum of 4 hours a day to make sure to enjoy the skiing down !
Every morning after breakfast, and a short briefing from your guide, you'll jump in the minibus, ready for a full day of powder skiing before coming back to the cozyness of Hotel Aak and recharge your batteries for the next day.
Your guide, Jonas
Ski touring is best enjoyed in good company !
Jonas Østrem is a young Norwegian mountain guide, living in Ålesund when he is not travellling the world for climbing or skiing.
We met when he was a student of ours during the 6 month ski and avalanche course Ski og Skred, in Alta, Nothern Norway. His attitude, both relaxed and very serious and his qualities as a skier and a "powder finder" made us want to push the collaboration further, and after being a helper for us in France for two seasons, he started to follow the IFMGA education in Norway (Nortind) which gives us today the possibility to work with him.
He has his own company, Vertikale Eventyr, but we're still planning many adventures together.
For this trip, his local knowledge, his network of contacts in the region will be the key to an unforgettable experience !
