Talk to a guide :
ski touring in Norway by night

A fantastic week.

Fred, thanks for a fantastic week. We have enjoyed it immensely. Despite the poor snow conditions we managed with your good knowledge to find decent snow. We did not really know what we expected when we signed up for this trip, but fell for the concept. And we can now fully subscribe to it. The combination of your in-depth knowledge about mountains in general and the area in particular and the “road-trip” characteristics where we go to different places depending on the conditions, is very compelling. On top of that we got a good insight into skiing French style with a good lunch in the middle of the day (already missing it). The flying with the micro light was a new and enjoyable experience, the Via Ferrata too. A special thanks also to JB and Victor for their good guiding in Sestriere and Val Thorens.

Winter

Riders in the Dark. Ski the arctic night in Norway!

Dates
15th to 21st december 2017

Level C-D, 3-4

Alta, in Norway, Finnmark, is famous for being “the city of the northern lights” and people are travelling there to watch them, but heading up to 70° north in the middle of December remains an unusual idea for a ski touring trip. It took us some time and many discussions with the locals to finally give it a try… No regrets !

During the darkest times of the year, ski touring on those beautiful mountains of northern Norway is a very unique experience… The light up there in December is very special, and it is safe to say that it’s actually not dark 24 hours a day. There are a few hours where an incredible blue light is giving a new life to the landscape. Snow covered mountains, fjords, ocean, everything seems unreal and very sharp at the same time : a vision that is beyond words and imagination.

When the true darkness is here, then it’s time to ski with headlamps. For that purpose, some norwegian ski touring enthusiast have developed strong headlamp that will not just allow you to ski in the night, but they will make it easy and fun.

Look here at the incredible photos from Thomas Kleiven.

Day 1 :

Arrival in Alta airport. We drive 80km to the place where we will stay, Langfjordbotn.

Meeting with Moonlight Mountain Gear that will provide us with headlamps and skis for the ones who need it.

Days 2 to 6 :

Five days skiing.

Every day we go for a new ski tour. Even during the darkest periods, the region is full of possibilities. We will both ski the forests and go for the peaks.

Day 7 :

A last tour in the morning and we leave to Alta Airport.

Place

Norway, region of Finnmark.

We meet in Alta, at the airport

Climate

The absence of sun doesn’t help the temperatures to rise, but even in the winter the gulf stream is still on, and we can expect a coldness that is similar to what we experience in the Alpine valleys in the winter. Which means that it can go down to -20° and sometimes be a bit above freezing level.

Snow / Weather

To make of this very special trip an experience that you will enjoy to the maximum, we need some days of stable weather and a decent snow cover. To ensure that, we will get the flight tickets and confirm the trip two weeks before departure date. We’ll be in close contact with you to follow the evolution of the weather and make the best decision. For that reason, no deposit will be asked from you.

Accommodation

We stay in a typical, cosy norwegian house, with double and triple rooms, and a sauna, of course !
