Discover ice climbing!
Ice climbing is a sport that has the repuation to be difficult, dangerous and physically very demanding.
The goal of this course is to show you that this is exactly the other way around, that climbing these fairy tale and ephemeral structures is accessible and fun!
The region of Jämtland is full of possibilities, from small icefalls perfect for beginners to expert multi-pich routes.
From Åre, the spots are between 20mn to 1hr drive, which makes it a very central and convenient starting point.
Program
Note that to make the best out of this course, it is strongly recommended to have a minimum climbing experience, even only indoor.
If you already know how to belay a partner it's more time left for climbing!
During these 2 days, we'll climb from 9 to 16.
According to the level of the participants, we'll walk you through:
- The gear, use & specifications
- Assessment of ice quality. How to climb good and safe ice!
- Belaying technique, and what's different from rock climbing
- All types of anchors (ice screws, belays, abalakovs)
- Climbing technique
- Smart outdoor life routines to feel good and perform even at the coldest of the winter
And of course, we'll climb as much as possible, with headlamps if necessary.


Getting there
The easiest way to reach and leave Åre is with the evening or night trains on Friday and Sunday.

A car ride from Stockholm to Åre takes about 8hrs, not including the imprevisibility of the harsh swedish winter weather...
You can also fly to Östersund, in that case please contact us to check the possibilities of transfer to Åre.
Your guide
Oscar Wahlund is an IFMGA Mountain Guide, member of the SBO, Swedish Mountain Guide Association.
He's living in Östersund and knows the region like the back of his hand.
Dedicated ice climber, he also loves teaching and is the perfect guy to show you around and take your ice climbing to the next level!
