Japan | Road Trip

Niveau: Technical C-D

Skiing powder snow, that’s what we are looking for in Japan ! With regular off-piste from the lifts and a bit of ski touring, this road trip around the island of Hokkaido will take you to that incredibly light, deep, dry and fast snow.

Certainly one of the best in the world.

During those 8 days, you’ll get much more than just the ski experience. The food, the culture, the kindness of the Japanese, the Onsen (hot springs) culture, and of course the beauty of a landscape where the word winter gets its whole meaning, all of these are worth the trip and make skiing in Japan a must-do in a skier’s life.

To make the best of these seven days skiing, we have chosen to be flexible and be ready to move around Hokkaido as much as needed to follow the best powder. During the trip, we will be the first half on the southern part of Hokkaido, and then move to the north for the last four days. We will live in central places that will allow us to visit many different spots. As driving on Japanese roads in winter can be really epic, we will have a four wheel drive minivan to move around.

Day 1 : Flight to Sapporo

Day 2 : We meet at the airport, then drive towards the Niseko area.

Day 3 to 5 : Skiing on the southern part of the island. Depending on the conditions we’ll ski places like Kiroro, Rusutsu, Niseko…

Day 6 : We move to the north and stop on the road for some good skiing, in a resort or touring. In the evening we arrive in Furano.

Day 7 to 9 : Skiing the northern part of Hokkaido in resorts such as Furano, Asahidake, Kurodake or in the backcountry.

Day 10 : Driving back to Sapporo, flight back.

We meet in Sapporo (Chitose) Airport. This is located on Hokkaido, northern island in the Japanese archipelago.

Climate, snow & skiing

With an average snow fall that is close to 15m a year, no need to explain that the weather can be bad. It doesn’t mean there is no chance for a bluebird day, but most likely it will be snowing.

But that’s exactly what we are looking for, no ?

The low pressure systems coming from Siberia are maintaining a temperature below 0°c from December to February, and bringing some snowfalls that are not only remarquable for their amount, but also by their quality. Dry and light, this snow is incredibly fast and allow us to ski in extremely deep powder even in medium angle terrain. The really good tree skiing that is found in Japan allow us as well to ski whatever the weather, the visibility, the amount of new snow !

Off-piste skiing, Ski touring

Technical level C-D

Though this is not a snow that is hard to ski, you need to be comfortable with powder skiing to enjoy it to the maximum.

Most of the resorts are open 12h / day, so it’s easy to adjust the ski days to your fitness.

The first part of the trip, we will stay in a rented cottage, and cook our food ourselves. Restaurant is also a good option, but shopping your groceries in Japan is a nice experience.

When in Furano, we’ll stay in a Hotel (equivalent European 3 stars), half board.
